Crochet tutorials (for US / UK / AUS)

Post by NaturalistDesigns » Mon Aug 09, 2010 2:51 pm

Would anyone like me to write some basic tutorials up? I know don't make it fully clear, are just in UK / AUS or some just in US. I wanted to try and clarify it :)

YES PLEASE!!!

I have trouble understanding some of the patterns etc so it would be handy - I had to look about 10 different tutorials and kind of cross reference to get the hang of granny squares :?

No problem :D I've started trying to write a double crochet (single crochet for the US) one; I'll do a granny square tute as I'm working on a big blanket at the moment.

ARGH how do you get yours so neat?? My squares show the same pattern but it's much looser and nowhere near as tidy - obviously I understand you're much more experienced - could you include maybe a pic or video of how you hold both the needle and thread you're crocheting? I'm not sure if I'm holding it in such a way that means it will be looser. I can't pull the thread loop tight as then I can't pull the other thread through it...if that makes sense.

I always go through step by step - are you a lefty or a righty crochetter? I'm a lefty so note on my listings I can't do it back to front

I picked up granny squares quite quickly. But I'm wanting to write it in easier terms - especially for those starting out :)

I'd suggest a book! It's by Debbie Stoller, and it's called Stitch'n Bitch: The Happy Hooker (yeah I know... :D but it's really about crochet!). Excellent directions even for complete beginners, and nice projects. Check your local library! Or buy your own, it's not too expensive. Check out play.com (for the UK) or Amazon, or your nearest book store :)

Ohhh that's too bad... I loved it. There are so many different stitches and nice projects to get you started, and I thought the basic instructions were very good even for beginners. But we all are different learners, so maybe it suits some and not others... I do like your crochet stuff tho, NaturalistDesigns! :) I crochet, knit and sew quite a lot myself, too.

Hey Chrissie - do you think you could do an explanation of how to read crochet patterns?? I really want to try something a bit more challenging as I can now do granny squares with my eyes shut but when I look at even simple patterns, it's like reading another language - I understand the stitch abbreviations (like dc etc) but it's the way they're worded that is confusing :)

Without knowing all the facts, off the top of my head you could also be using a larger hook which would cause looser stitches. But of course being inexperienced and having uneven tension may also be the culprit.
