STEP ONE: Making organic looking dreads.

I start out by backcombing in the usual way although I tend to do these quite loosely. Just concentrate on getting your nice, tapered shape and keeping the dreads reasonably smooth.
When I'm done, my pre-sealed dreads look something like this:

Image

STEP TWO: Sealing the dreads.

I usually make my dreads in batches of ten and then hang them over my washing line. Next, I boil a kettle and pour the water downwards, over the hanging dreads:

Then, when the dreads are cooled enough to handle but still warm, I palm roll them a little:

Here is the boiled and palm rolled dread:

STEP THREE: The washing machine!

When all of the dreads have been boiled and palm rolled, I zip them up inside a cushion cover and stick them in the machine on a 60 degree wash cycle. this seems to be hot enough to help matt them up a little more and add a touch of 'wiggle' to them without turning them into little curly frizzies

STEP FOUR: Adding the weft.

I take my weft and cut it into section of roughly an inch. Using liquid gold, I secure the weft as shown below:

Image

I did experiment with wrapping the section of weft horizontally around the top of the dread but preferred the method pictured due to the way the weft hangs more away from the dread and stays separate. This, IMO, improves the multi-textured look and also makes the weft more managable once the dreads are installed.

Here are some close ups of the real thing:

As you can see from the photos, the visibility of the sewn part of the weft depends on its colour and on the colour of the dread to which it is secured. I haven't really found this to be a problem once the hair is installed

STEP FIVE: Installation.

The dreads are installed in the usual DED manner, braiding down the side of the dread WITHOUT the weft and here is the end result:

I'm so glad you found that one! It didn't come up in my Google cache searches and I was hoping it would pop up sooner or later :)

I'm planning on doing something vaguely similar, but using my method of making dreads, and not the natural-look here.

BUT is it possible to do the natural-look dread in, say, Buyhair colours? I know the texture of the hair is different than B&G for example, but would it come out similar?

I suppose it might as apparently buyhair looses it's shine in the washing machine and it will probably make it more tangled.

You could always do a tester I suppose

When you put them in do you braid the wefted part with your hair or does the wefted part hang freely?

she says in the tutorial:
STEP FIVE: Installation.

The dreads are installed in the usual DED manner, braiding down the side of the dread WITHOUT the weft and here is the end result:
So the loose hair hangs loose

Ahh, this is great!! :D Absolutely gotta give this a try. I've always been ennoyed of the shiny outcome when just backcombing synthetic hair.

If you do have troubles installing, I'm not saying you will haha, you can always post a wanted ad in the Extensionists in your area subforum and have someone install them for you. There probably is somebody in your area or within a short distance :)
I mentioned the install video tuts in the other thread you posted in lol.

Hey! I'm in the same boat, at the moment I'm beginning to make some that should be good enough for my head(better than my first lot anyway!) hopefully they'll be done in time for download.

See here http://hairextensionsforum.com/viewtopi ... =33&t=5796 I'm trying to get a few folk together maybe to install each others at download.

Is there a reason why a kettle is used rather than a steamer etc. or is this just what the creator had to hand?

Also, if the reason the water is poured down over the dread to give it a smoother effect?

I think boiling gives a more natural effect in general when not done with steam, as in it doesn't shrink so much and you can palm roll it easier also. I think the water is just pured down mainly cuz if it is hanging on a washing line, you can palm roll them all down straight away and easier. :)
