Backcombing

Hello,
I seem to have this reoccurring issue no matter what type of hair I use. I backcomb and along the way a weak spot with form so i continue to backcomb and it just up with knots that i can't for the life of my get out and it just ends up all uneven. Also sometimes bits at the end seem to just fall off while i'm backcombing them. Is this normal ? How can i rectify it ?
