1st SE attempt shapeshifter...fail

Post by slaaneshque » Sun May 22, 2011 12:07 am

These are my first ever single-ended dreads. (And perhaps my third-ever attempt at dreads, period.) I made them out of Shapeshifter and used both the flat-iron and regular iron methods to try and seal them. They turned out kind of lumpy, not really tapered and with very messy loops. The Shapeshifter was really hard to seal compared with Jumbo Braid--maybe my irons didn't get hot enough? I don't mind that they're fuzzy--I like that look better than super-smooth, but they look unravel-y at parts. Does that mean those parts weren't sealed well enough or twisted tightly enough or backcombed enough? I need to find something better to anchor my dreads, I think, because I can't seem to keep them twisted while I seal them and the loops get all messy when I backcomb...

The whole thing:

Thanks for looking--I know the board gets a lot of these :)

ETA: I don't know why that last picture is so big--I resized it in Photobucket, but it keeps looking huge! Sorry!

Shapeshifter can be very tricky to seal as it is pretty heat resistant. I have some SS DE's & they're about as fuzzy as those.

OK, that's good to know--it probably wasn't the best choice for a first try, but it's all I had in the house!

Isn't shape shifter usually used for fringes and extensions? I don't reallly know. Like DSM said, you can make dreads out of it, BUT IT's A PAIN. lol. I admire your willingness to try, though. I'm set in my KK ways. :)

SS makes beautiful dreads..they're much softer & smoother than KK. I think it has a multitude of uses, I've seen some great dreads made with it & also some fantastic loose extensions.

The dreads are much softer and more flexible than KK ones--I can't wait to wear them, however lumpy :D I've had it in as loose extensions, too, and it was brilliant.

Rivetlicker: I tried unraveling one of them, and it refused to come undone! So, yeah--awesome!

Toxic Trish: These do seem more like natural hair. And thanks!
