First set of synthetics / curlies

Post by Tipsyxx » Mon May 16, 2011 5:54 am

Note: The ends are not sealed! If you know a good clean way to seal the ends for curly dreads please let me know.

Excuse the very first photo, Only pay attention to the pics of the dreads on the mannequin.

if you seal them before you curl them you shouldnt need to do anything else to the ends.

Hard to see the dreads [maybe better lighting?], but I really dig the texture of them.

Well the way i did them was I twisted a pair of dreads together. and set them in boiling water and hung them up so they dripped dry.

The ends aren't sealed up though. Should I use a hot iron or...?

It's very difficult to tell, but if the water is hot enough to seal the rest of the dreads, it should be sealing the ends as well. Perhaps backcomb the ends more and keep them twisted when you pour on the hot water.
Website? Yup, I have one of those! www.bloodhoney.net

I've started to re-seal these using the damp cloth and wet-dry hair straightener method.

and dang these are turning out to be micro dreads.

They look great! I love the shape of the curl and the color.

Thanks.

Did you see the straightened ones? The forum image size cropped the other half of the pic out =[

Edit: I also plan on buying some clear elastics to replace the ugly chunky black ones. I only had these black elastics when i started.

have a look at Lara's video as SE loops, this helped me to stop using rubber bands completly and just yous the strength of my back comb to make a nice loop there are also other methods like the one IKS uses (i think). And of course it just means you don't snag your hair on a band as they can damage hair?

Hope this helps on the dreads them self they look well back comber from what i see, but i cannot see the ends.

SE loops!
here is how I do it, you don't need any elastics or thread! Just use a thin piece of the hair you're turning into a dread!

loop hair around the hanger(whatever you're using)

Separate about 8 single hairs off the side and loop around the space where the loop should end:

Now take the small bunch of loose hair you ended up with, split in half and send each half opposite direction around the dread and double knot!

hm.. I've never had my hair snag on the rubber bands. they're the "no damage" ones especially made for braiding hair.

* My hair is naturally a little oily so I can usually just pull the bands right off without un-looping them.

I tried your little method, didn't work very well, when i split the separated hairs in half and wrapped them in opposite directions, the entire wrap came loose. =/

and now its been so long since i made any. I suck at it again. and this new comb is awful. its flimsy =[ the teeth will bend and not go thru the dread when it starts to get knotty.

and i keep getting these GOD AWFUL FRICKIN tight lumpy knots in the dread. I have horrrrible OCD, so when i feel a knot in my dread. i go ballistic. literally. I'll rip out the knot and throw the dread away.

hah. i dont think this is for me. it relaxes me when I get them right. but oh boy does it send my stress levels skyrocketing when i screw up.

hEY TIPSY!

Don't Give up! You might want to get the SIlky kind of KK! I find that when I use the kind most people like those knots drive me WILD lol
BUt silky is harder to matt, so its more natural feeling!

Yeah, a long time ago when i first started making dreads back in like.. 06, I used silky KK because that was the cheapest kind the hair store had in stock. i didnt know the diff between silky/jumbo at that time lol. my only thought was "oh this might be fun, *grab a cheap bag of hair*"

That brand is probably not the best. it tangled easily, I couldn't get it to back comb evenly, I used it for silky wrapped dreads [the stuff where you braid one end into your hair and then wrap the other side around your hair..] yeah.

F yeah! Rocked that at a school football game. Lol. unfortunately I don't have any of those pictures.

Anyways, When I get some money to order. i'll buy some better quality Silky and try it out.

Anyways my main reason for coming to this thread Tadaaaa!
I didn't give up. I got mad, wanted some shorter length thick dreadies. no funky bumps!

I think when i tried to start back up, I was using a different style new comb, the teeth were weak and flimsy, they kept bending around o.O so i switched back to my old comb lol.

edit:

After making these thicker ones I realize my beginner ones were definitely not back combed enough. lol.

I'm getting a wrist, and headache from using the Wet cloth + wet-dry hair straightener method to seal,

Can anyone give me some recommendations for good handheld steamers that are reasonably priced.
