First try roving!

Post by Dollylox » Thu Sep 23, 2010 11:50 am

So this is my first ever time making roving dreads!
It was a little daunting after 4 years of only working with synthetic hair, but it took me all of 2 minutes to get into it.. I think I'm hooked now guys!

I think they turned out pretty nice, I would wear them.. but I would like your expert opinions please ;) anything that could be improved and any tips?

Some pics:

Yeah, awesome colour choices.

They have a lovely taper & I'm super fond of thinner rovings :D

How many times have you felted them?? as lightly felted will fluff up in no time & moult everywhere, the more felted the tighter the wool "knits" together & less likelihood of it happening. If you pull a little at the width of the roving & you can do it quite easily, they won't be felted enough.

I've refelted bought roving dreads before cos of this.

Welcome to roving ^_^

Once you get the lengths all perfect like with your synths, you're putting roving dreads in your catalog darl :P

Thanks guys, I've got the hang of getting the lengths right, this was roving I bought from Kellye and from her clearout thread, so some of it was in bits so I just had to make do with some being a bit longer, but I managed to make sure that like they are in pairs of each length if that makes sense, so they could be installed like layered. :)

I felted them 3 times, I tried 3 different kinds of soap, the last soap I used seems best though, I'll have a go at pulling the widths and see what happens there, thanks for the tip :)

I can't wait to buy more wool and have another go

All my roving is varied in length, I measure once & then use that one as a guide, but I tear my roving instead of cutting it, so slightly different length happens. In fact MORE people ask for slightly different lengths to create that "layered" look.

It's hard to get roving perfectly uniform, I have to say I prefer it to look a bit more natural and "rustic"
The reason I love roving so much is because it's a totally natural fibre so when I have a roving head I feel like a snuggly hippy

I started my roving adventure by getting a mixed bag of scraps from someone too - it's a good way to start :)

Yeah, true that ;)

I've just tried pulling them width ways, they wont budge unless I pull super hard (which I'm not going to try as I dont want to ruin them) lol
And they seem fairly stiff, but not like rock solid!

Sweet :D

You don't want super solid. They'd stick out all over the place.

Gorgeous! I love the thinner look & taper. If I was going to get wool dreads, I would definitely go to you because those look awesome!

Those are spectacular. The colors, as mentioned several times, are freaking amazing.

They look really nice eh, and the colours are charming :)
I reckon that variation in length is awesome. If you sort them into bundles according to length then it's really easy to install them (like, the short ones underneath and around your face and the long ones at the crown or the other way round for an A-line).
Oh, and may I say, welcome to the revolution :P

For your first go I think you have done damn good... looking at the final picture where you are holding them up they look well felted as they are holding their shape and not dropping over the edges of your hand...

Now that you feel more confident with working with wool I am sure it will be no time at all until we see some amazing creations from you!! :D
