Post by miss_mortisha » Tue Sep 21, 2010 12:55 pm

Well i decided to give this ago again and these are the first batch... bit of a mismatch of colours as i wanted to make sure i had the technique down before using all my wool!

A few of them have some slits in them so i need to sort that out....

Any comment/ help would be a great help :)

They look awesome :D How many times did you machine em??

I get the odd crack, but it "felts" itself out with a few machine washes.......palm roll em really well before machining them should help too ^_^ (& Iusually 3rd or 1/4 all my roving - which also seems to help :P)

I do it on my knee. Roll the end, so you get a nice tip, then hold that bit with your left hand, slowly pulling it outwards, while rolling with your right......if that makes sense??

Wearing jeans helps, I've found :D

Jeans do help...either that or wrap a towel round your legs tight and the friction is even better

:D

There are LOADS of tips on here for self installs. A rat tail comb, 2 mirrors, section your hair first I used to half my hair (in bunches) then half the half, half it agin & again & again, etc.

ETA: Belle linked the thing I was on about :D

They look great...the only real tip with self installs is practise

I don't use two mirrors, just one from the front. Put it into three sections, one at the back (from the crown down to the back of each ear), then one on either side of your parting at the front...straight line across the bottom so you have a long row section, then pinch a square section on one side and braid, then the other, then so on until you get to the middle...then section another row and do the same, feeling with your fingers to try and do a brickwork pattern (the braid covers the gaps between the two braids below it)...keep going up in rows until you do the whole back, then do each side from the bottom up alternately...

Hope that makes sense...that's how I do it anyway

To be honest, I only use the mirror to make sure I finish the braid off neatly and to help making sure I've sorted out all the pokies etc.

I do the rest by feel, doing it in a mirror is far too confusing, I get all backwards and mixed up

Learn blanket stitch...when I did it was a revelation...practise on someone else's head as it's easier to learn that way but once you've got your head round it, it really is easy doing it on yourself
