Ok, proper newbie question..But what are crin, rexlace, tubing and all the other plasticy/foam type things people use? I know what scoobies are but that is about it. Also, what are cyberlox made from and how do they differ from dreadfalls? I haven't ventured into plastics yet but that is through ignorance rather than lack of interest. |

Cyberlox is a type of ribbon made from crinoline that is sewn into a tube shape. It is lightweight, bouncy, and many colors are UV reactive. This is cyberlox:
Foam is craft foam, usually sold in the kids' crafts part of craft stores. It is worn in falls or extensions by being cut into strips. These are sheets of foam:
And this is a pair of falls made from cyberlox and strips of foam:
Rexlace, also known as gimp or just plastic lacing, is flat plastic craft lace also originally manufactured for kids' crafts. It comes on spools. This is what a large spool of rexlace looks like (it also comes on tiny 10 yard spools, but I don't have any of those):
Tubing is pretty much any kind of plastic tubing. Fish tank tubing, for example, would be considered plastic tubing.
The main difference between all of these materials and dreads is that dreads are made from synthetic hair; none of the above products contain any hair. _________________ For every sprinkle I find, I shall kill you. |

Thanks for the reply =)
But one last thing now - how does Rexlace differ in appearance to scoobies? |

Rexlace is flat. Scoobies are round. That's pretty much it; they're meant for the same type of crafts so they're almost identical _________________ For every sprinkle I find, I shall kill you. |

In reards to the world of fake hair:
dreads= synthetic hair that is bought and beackcombed and twisted into dread shapes- these can also be bought pre made from places like afrocare
Rexlace= a thin plastic lace tat is flat ( unike scoobies which are round) bought on a roll
flat plastic= from pepi's wide flat plastic
Tubing= hollow tubes flat or corrugated bought from various DIY shops
Cyberlox=REAL name, tubular crinoline. used in millinery. It is made of plastic, it is streachy and hollow. comes in various sizes and texture. sometimes sold as decorating 'ribbon'
Foam= sheets of craft foam in A4 or A3 size, it is cut up in strips and mounted into falls, sometimes decorated, hole punched or sprayed
Wool slub= a thick and thin wool that has been loosely spun, look a little like natural dreads
Colinette- a wool maker that dyes wool slub- .5 and .0 are used for falls mainly but they make very many beautiful wools
Roving= wool tops, un spun wool, natural or dyed. you dip it in hot soapy water to felt them into dread shapes
'faux roving'= fairly new use of material- basically fleece fabric cut into strips to create dread shapes- same can be done ith crushed velvet material
wool= so many types out there so many textures so many colours ( i specialise in wool falls and have done for over 5 years becaue I love wool so much!)
Falls/ pony falls= used to describe fake hair of any material mounted onto elastic or lace that you tie round pony tails
loose falls=synthetic hair, mounted to make a fake pony tail
Dreadband= can be made of dreads , roving or wool, usually a fabric headband with 'dreads' sewn on it to make a front piece to cover your own hair. I make wigs like this that totally cover the head for people with short hair
any more terms you want explaining? I think I have covered the basics there!

Rexlace and foam are pretty easy -- major craft chains will have them in the kids' crafts aisle.
Cyberlox is a bit more tricky to come by.
I sell it:
http://ikickshins.net/cyberlox.htm
As does Dark Locks: http://darklocks.com
BL Trimmings does as well, but I've heard their crin isn't good quality anymore.
Tubing is a little more vague: hardware stores, pet stores, craft stores all may have plastic tubing of some kind. _________________ For every sprinkle I find, I shall kill you. |

you can get rexlace in some craft shops by the meter, but best to buy it from
http://www.craftdepot.co.uk/contents.cfm?maincat=34
You ahve to get funky colours of cyberlox from the US they just don't sell it here- apart from BLtrimmings, as said, but you have to ring them, they don't always have it and it is limited in colour. _________________ Rupunzel,Rupunzel, let down your woolly hair!

Just an idea: if one of the forum heavies (hehe, I make you sound like bouncers...) could create some sort of stickied Glossary thread for all the absolute beginners to reference when they come across something they don't understand. It could have brief, clear explanations like pinkfaery and leperqueen have given of all these confusing terms like Rexlace and Cyberlox and perhaps even pictures. Y'know, just to help people out and all. That's if there isn't already one which I've missed out...if there is I'm going to feel/look very stupid and start banging things with my head...heh! _________________ 00111100 00110011 |
